ABSTRACT

An Analysis of Preservice Secondary Mathematics Teachers' Knowledge, Beliefs, Goals, and Behaviors: Implications for Recruitment, Preparation, and Retention
Alice F. Artzt and Frances R. Curcio

The purpose of this paper is to describe an investigation of preservice teachers' knowledge, beliefs, and goals and how these factors contribute to their development as mathematics teachers from when they first decided to enter the program as college freshmen to when they begin student teaching in their senior year. This will be done by (1) presenting samples of longitudinal qualitative data on preservice secondary mathematics teachers in the first cohort of the TIME 2000 Project (i.e., data from 1998 to 2001) that describe their development with respect to knowledge, beliefs, goals, and behaviors; (2) describing characteristics and emerging patterns revealed in the data and related validity issues; and (3) discussing the implications and value of such research on recruitment, preparation, and retention of prospective secondary mathematics teachers.
