WORKSHOP ABSTRACT Studio Calc/Phys Workshop Dawn Meredith To help students make connections between calculus and physics, we have developed a curriculum that combines the two subjects. Wherever possible, students immediately apply the mathematics to physical applications; the physics is then applied to real-world situations. In addition to making clear the connections between calculus and physics, we used other effective pedagogical tehniques: group work, project-based learning, structured problem solving, writing to learn, and focus on conceptual understanding. During our workshop, participants will 1) see how we reordered the topics so the two subjects meshed 2) work on a combined calc/physics activity 3) examine some of our combined calc/phys projects 4) consider administrative and organizational challenges to creating a similar course at their own institution.
