Dear Teaching Colleague: April 27, 1998

You are cordially invited to attend the

EIGHTEENTH STATE-WIDE MEETING

OF HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICS TEACHERS

hosted by the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the

UNIVERSITY OF MAINE

ORONO, MAINE

FRIDAY MAY 29, 1998.

Registration for the meeting will begin at 8:30 am, the meeting itself will start at 9:00 am. If you are unfamiliar with our campus, take I-95 and get off at Exit 51. Go east to the third traffic light and turn right onto College Avenue. Enter the campus at the Alfond Arena entrance. Bennett Hall is located on the opposite side of the Memorial Gymnasium (the building with the large "M" on it). Ample parking should be available because classes are not in session. You will need to have a parking permit which you can obtain (at no charge) at the registration table.

The program for the meeting is enclosed. The first two major events in the morning session are presentations by "The Rocketman" (Steve Whitney) and "The Physics Guy" (Andrew Paradis). Steve will be discussing physics teaching resources available from NASA and Andrew will make a presentation on his famous "Ask the Physics Guy!" web page. Next we shall split into two groups and attend either of two workshops (see the attached schedule). Following the complimentary lunch, these two options will be reversed. Finally, there will be an opportunity for you to present or discuss any topic or demonstration of your choice, or to initiate a discussion among the attendees. Thus this letter is also a CALL FOR CONTRIBUTED PAPERS OR DEMONSTRATIONS. Normally these are of 5 to 15 minute duration. If you need any particular equipment for your demonstration, please contact me in advance at your earliest convenience.

Those attending this meeting qualify for 0.5 CEU (continuing education units). If you wish to receive this 0.5 CEU you must: (a) attend the events of the meeting and (b) pick up your certification at the end of the meeting. There is no advance paperwork on your part; however, there is a $5.00 fee to have the credits registered.

I hope that you can attend this meeting. Please feel free to bring along another one or more teaching colleagues. We look forward to seeing you May 29.

Sincerely,
